Q&A – User cannot access a site from Chrome

Introduction

Users often will ask questions about their browser. Here we go over the basics of the Chrome browser.

Google Chrome

In Chrome, upper right corner, click the 3 dot “Customize and Control” button.
(see menu below)

New incognito window

Normally, your web-surfing activity gets recorded in History. The New incognito window allows for private browsing. Websites visited are not recorded in Chrome’s history.

History

Stores sites that you have visited.

Downloads

Lists downloads (e.g., music files, etc.) that you have made through the browser.

Bookmarks

Chrome allows you to bookmark sites. Bookmarked sites are listed here.

Importing bookmarks from another Browser

Chrome will list the other browsers on your system and allow you to import from them. You can also export the bookmarks from a different browser as an HTML file, and then import that file into Chrome’s Bookmark area.

Zoom

Allows you to adjust magnification.

Print

  • Prints out the webpage(s).
  • Can also save website information as a PDF.
  • Has print options (e.g., you can choose paper size, margins, etc.)

Cast

Allows you to cast an internet stream to an external device (e.g., compatible TV).

Find

Allows you to search for text in a site.
(Example search for “s” -results below)

More Tools

Clear Browsing Data

(This feature is part of “Settings” area).

In addition to being able to delete browsing history, you can get rid of cookies and cached images, which take up memory and may also pose a security threat.

Click Advanced.
(“Advanced” options display)

  • Passwords – Clears any passwords to different sites that you opted for the browser to remember.
  • Autofill form data – clears any autofill form data that you opted for the browser to remember.

Extensions

Click More tools/ Extensions
(“Chrome extensions” screen displays)

Allows you to enable/disable add on apps that can be integrated with Chrome.

Settings

We’ve already mentioned some items from Settings (e.g., “Clear Browsing Data”) above.

Additionally, this area has options like “Security” which allows for safe browsing (warns you about accessing malicious sites).

Reset
(“Reset and cleanup” options)

Clicking Restore settings to their original defaults can be tried when a browser is not working efficiently. If this doesn’t work, then re-installing the browser may be necessary.

Appendix

Important items for a Tech Pro to know about browsers:

  • How to reset the whole browser
  • Clearing cache
  • Re-installing the browser
  • Moving favorites from one computer to another.
  • How to make a browser your default browser
