Sharing a folder

Sharing a folder on a client machine.

Scenario: We have a folder on a client machine desktop that we want to share with other users. The folder is called “Share”.

Right-click the folder
(menu displays).

Click Properties
(“Properties” dialog box displays).

Click Sharing tab.
(“Sharing” tab displays).

Click Advanced Sharing.
(“UAC” screen displays).

Enter admin credentials

Click Yes.

NOTE: Above screen cap lists the domain (“DCDH0”). If the domain did not display, then you could enter the admin user name as “DCDH0\helpdesk”

(“Advanced Sharing” dialog box displays).

Check Share this folder.
(“Limit the number of simultaneous users to: 20” displays)

Enter a name for the folder to be shared in Share name field.

NOTE: if we want to share the folder with more than 20 people, than the folder must be stored on the server.

Sharing a folder on a server.

Scenario: We have a folder on a server machine desktop that we want to share with other users. The folder is called “Share”.

Right-click the folder
(menu displays).

Click Properties
(“Properties” dialog box displays).

Click Sharing tab.
(“Sharing” tab displays).

Click Advanced Sharing.
(“Advanced Sharing” dialog box displays).

Check Share this folder.
“Limit the number of simultaneous users to: [#]” displays.

NOTE: A much higher number of user accounts is available to share the folder than when we created a share folder on a client machine.

Enter a name for the folder to be shared in Share name field.

Click Apply.

Click OK.
(“Share” folder is created).

Accessing the Shared folder

In the screen cap below, the Network path to the shared folder displays as “\\DCDH\Share”.

Note that “Share” is the name of the shared folder.

From the machine from which you want to connect to the server, open File Explorer.

Enter the string \\DCDH\Share in the address field.

Press ENTER.
(“Network Error” displays)

Although the path is valid, the account has not been given rights to access the share folder.

Granting Permissions to a shared folder.

After creating a shared folder, you must grant permission rights to others.

In the Advanced Sharing dialog box, click Permissions.
(“Permissions for Share” dialog box displays).

Click Add.
(“Select Users, Computers, Service Accounts, or Groups” dialog box displays).

In the Enter the object names to select field, enter the user’s account name with whom you are sharing the folder. Click Check Names to validate.

Click OK when finished adding.

Grant permission levels to added user.

Click OK. Then click Apply and OK.

Once permissions have been granted, the user should be able to access the shared folder.
